And just like that, May is over and we are looking into June! I'm glad the weather is starting to agree with the month/season finally too! As this week was our last full "normal" week, we have kept very busy, while also having fun! Additionally, this will be the last post for the 2018-2019 school year.
Things To Note:
Thank you all for a wonderful year with your kiddos! It has been a blast! I hope you all have a relaxing, fun, and exciting summer!
Best,
Meribeth Heitbrink
- I/E: Students worked on their "Passion Projects." They have been researching about their topics and final projects. They have been compiling their research into a presentation, which they will be giving to the class next week! These are great projects to do at school, or at home!
- ELA: We focused on the following skills this week:
- Strategy: Ask & Answer Questions - throughout a text, ask questions to help better understand what you are reading
- Skill: Author's Point of View - identify an author's viewpoint or stance on a particular topic/idea and use details from the text to support that point of view
- Genre: Persuasive Article persuades a reader to support an idea or viewpoint based on facts and evidence
- Vocabulary Strategy: Root Words are the basic part of a word. Knowing the meaning of these roots, allows us to use that meaning combined with context clues to define unknown or unfamiliar words.
- Grammar: Comparing with Good and Bad - we use irregular forms of good and bad depending on how many thing we are comparing (better and worse = comparing two things, best and worst = comparing more than two things)
- Math: We are wrapping up topic 8 involving multiplication of fractions, whole numbers and mixed numbers. This week, we learned about finding the area of a rectangle, multiplying mixed numbers, using multiplication as scaling and making sense and preserving through problems. The main skills we focused on were changing mixed numbers to improper fractions, and then improper fractions back to mixed numbers.
- Social Studies: We started chapter 6, Articles of the Confederation, this week. We have been practicing study skills throughout the whole year by reading and filling out study guides. For this last chapter, students are working in pairs to read through the lessons in each chapter, and then work to fill out the study guide based on the information they have read. It is great for students to practice these skills independently to help them better prepare for studying as they get into the older grades.
- Science: We are working on a "Saving the Earth" pamphlet project to go along with our "Reducing Human Footprint" unit. Students will continue to work on this project into next week!
Things To Note:
- FIELD DAY: Field Day will be on Thursday, June 6th. Make sure your child comes to school in appropriate clothing for the outdoors, and a water bottle to stay hydrated! Students should apply any sunscreen needed prior to arriving at school.
- 5TH GRADE PICNIC: The picnic, held at Mallard Ridge, will be from 10:00-1:30 on Friday, June 7th. Students should apply any sunscreen needed prior to arriving at school. Students should plan to bring a packed lunch, drink and water bottle. There will be fruit and ice cream provided for students to enjoy!
- LAST DAY: The last day of school will be a half day (8:45-11:30) on Monday, June 10th. Students will not need to bring anything to school other than their yearbook and writing tool.
Thank you all for a wonderful year with your kiddos! It has been a blast! I hope you all have a relaxing, fun, and exciting summer!
Best,
