I can't believe it is already May! Only 25 days left until the last day of school, which is crazy! Until then, this is what we have been up to :)
Things To Note:
Have a nice weekend!
- I/E: We continued our project about countries involving research! Students worked on finding the capital, continent and flags of nearly 60 countries! Most students finished finding out this information for each of the countries and have now chosen one country to primarily focus and do a research project on, They are coming along great!
- ELA: We focused on the following skills this week:
- Strategy: Make Predictions using context clues in the story
- Skill: Compare & Contrast characters, settings and plot
- Genre: Realistic Fiction tells a story that while is not based on real events, could have realistic events, characters or settings
- Vocabulary Strategy: Context Clues can help us identify the meaning of unknown words by looking at the surrounding words or sentences
- Grammar: Independent & Dependent Clauses help us identify simple, compound and complex sentences, while also recognizing different conjunctions for each.
- Math: We are continuing to work with fractions, and more specifically subtracting with mixed numbers when there is regrouping. With lots of practice, we are getting so much better at this! We will continue to work on adding and subtracting mixed numbers for the next week or so before our test on May 16th!
- Social Studies: We finished up Chapter 5 this week about The American Revolution. We learned about the battles our country won and how we were eventually able to win independence from Great Britain. Rather than a test, we will be putting together a project that I will introduce next week that will serve as the assessment for this chapter.
- Science: We continued learning about the "Human Footprint" this week through various research activities on STEMscopes. Students watched educational videos about the impact humans have on earth, how over fishing affects the environment and the environmental changes that have occurred so far. Additionally, students worked on creating a human footprint poster to show positive/negative effects that humans have on living things, water, land and air.
- Apollo 13 Movie: As you are aware, we sent home permission slips about watching two science movies that had to do with rockets and space to connect to activities we will be doing for Science Night next week. We watched the movie, "Apollo 13" this week. Students learned about the seventh manned space mission and third intended to land on the moon.
Things To Note:
- OPEN HOUSE - SCIENCE NIGHT: Open House will be Thursday, May 9th from 6-7 pm. If you and your child are going to attend, please make sure to send back the form that went home earlier this week! It will be a fun night of hands on activities!
- ABC COUNTDOWN: With 25 days left now, there is a "theme" for each day until the last day of school based on the alphabet. Your child should have gotten a sheet outlining the themes for each day!
Have a nice weekend!
